HC Deb 27 February 1933 vol 275 cc14-5
28. Sir W. DAVISON (forMr. HANNON)

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that the machines now being used by the Post Office for the stamping of the words "Buy British" over postage stamps are foreign-made machines stamped with the words "Made in U.S.A."; and if it is impossible to secure machines of British origin to carry out this work?

Sir K. WOOD

No foreign-made stamp-cancelling machines have been bought by the Post Office since March, 1931, when British-made machines became available. A number of old foreign-made machines are still in use, but these are kept in running order by the replacement of worn or faulty parts with British-made components.

Mr. CHARLES WILLIAMS

Why, in March, 1931, particularly? Has there been some change?

Sir K. WOOD

When British-made machines became available.

Mr. WILLIAMS

But it was not this Government's fault that they were not available before?
