HC Deb 27 February 1933 vol 275 cc21-2
43. Mr. HICKS (forMr. RHYS DAVIES)

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether his attention has been drawn to the case of insurance policy-holders whose policies have lapsed, as they have recently fallen into arrears owing to the economic depression after many years regular payment; and if he will consider amending the law in favour of such policy-holders?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to the hon. Baronet the Member for Newcastle-upon-Tyne, East (Sir R. Aske) on 20th December last.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that insurance agents are now on strike in the town of Greenock, because of the attitude of an insurance company in lapsing the policies of poor policy-holders?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

I have referred the hon. Member who put down the question to a previous answer which, I think, fully covers the point.

Mr. WILLIAMS

In view of the fact that insurance workers are on strike as a protest against the attitude of the insurance company, what action, if any, are the Treasury likely to take to help these poor policy-holders?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

My hon. Friend is aware that the whole matter ig at present the subject of an inquiry.
