HC Deb 08 February 1933 vol 274 c174
9 and 10. Mr. TURTON

asked the Minister of Transport (1) how many prosecutions have been instituted under Section 19 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930; and how many persons have been convicted;

(2) whether he is satisfied that Section 19 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, is being observed by employers and drivers of commercial road vehicles; and what steps he has taken to secure the observance of this Section by the employers involved?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Pybus)

I cannot say how far the provisions of the Section are being complied with, and I have at present no power to take special steps to enforce them. My hon. Friend may have noticed from reports in the Press that convictions for serious offences under the Section have in some cases been followed by heavy fines; but no information is available as to the total number of convictions. The question of the more effective enforcement of this and other legal requirements will need to be considered in connection with the Government's proposed Bill for the better regulation and control of goods transport by road.

Mr. TURTON

Can my hon. Friend give any information as to the convictions from the statistics published each year?

Mr. PYBUS

I will look into that matter.
