HC Deb 12 December 1933 vol 284 cc200-1
45. Mr. PARKINSON

asked the Prime Minister whether, in view of administrative difficulties in the South African Protectorates which have been disclosed by the negotiations with Chief Tshekedi, he has considered the desirability of transferring the South African Protectorates from the Dominions to the Colonial Office?

The PRIME MINISTER

I do not think that recent events in the Bechuanaland Protectorate afford any sufficient reason for altering the present arrangement under which affairs relating to the Native Territories administered by the High Commissioner for South Africa are dealt with in the Dominions Office.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Will it be possible to make such modifications in the administration of these Protectorates as will ensure the same standard of public services in the Dominions as has hitherto existed in the Colonial Office services? I mean with regard to the better selection of the officials?
