HC Deb 11 December 1933 vol 284 c24
47. Mr. LEWIS

asked the Financial Secretary to the War Office if he will consider what arrangements could be made, in those districts where the school-leaving age is fixed at 14 years, to enable family allowances to serving soldiers and non-commissioned officers to be continued in respect of children remaining at school for a further year, in cases where the education of the children has been retarded owing to their previous residence 'abroad during the period of their fathers' foreign service?

Mr. COOPER

The standard of education given by Army schools at home and abroad is equal to that given by public elementary schools, and I cannot agree that residence abroad retards the education of soldiers' children. I, therefore, see no reason for any special arrangements in their case.

Mr. LEWIS

If I bring to the hon. Gentleman's notice certain definite cases where hardship has arisen, will he be prepared to consider the matter further?

Mr. COOPER

Certainly.
