50. Mr. THORNE

asked the Home Secretary whether he has received a report of the accident which occurred at Shotton ironworks, Flintshire, by the breaking of a chain of an overhead steam-crane, resulting in the death of an employé; and, in particular, when the chain was last inspected by the local factory inspector?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I am obtaining a report on this accident and I will communicate with the hon. Member when I have had time to consider it.

Mr. THORNE

Will the right hon. Gentleman inquire whether the crane in question was carrying a bigger weight than it was registered to carry?

Sir J. GILMOUR

Yes, I will look into all relevant matters.

52. Mr. THORNE

asked the Home Secretary whether he will call for a report of the fatal accident which occurred at the works of a Rochdale contractors through the clothing of the deceased man being caught in the shafting; and, in particular, whether the shafting had the protection for safeguarding the operator of the plant in accordance with regulations?
