§ Mr. ATTLEEMay I ask the Prime Minister whether it is the intention of the Government to take any other business beyond the Unemployment [Money] Resolution to-day?
§ The PRIME MINISTERI am sure that neither the hon. Gentleman nor the House will misunderstand me when I say that I regret that there has been a change in leadership, and that we hope that the Leader of the Opposition will be very speedily restored to health. With regard to business to-day, the Government propose to take the Notice of Motion, that is, the Financial Resolution on the Unemployment Bill, and Item I
§ in the Orders of the Day, the "Agricultural Marketing (Money);—Report thereon."
§ Mr. ATTLEEIn thanking the right hon. Gentleman for his reference to my right hon. Friend, whom we all hope to have back with us soon, may I ask him whether he proposes that the House should sit very late in the event of the Motion to suspend the Eleven o'Clock Rule being carried. Would not the taking of the other item after the Unemployment [Money] Resolution mean a very late sitting?
The PRIME MIMISTERI do not anticipate a late sitting. The only reason why the extra item has been put down is that we have come to a time in the Session when work rather accumulates, and there is a block. These things must be done before we adjourn for the Christmas Recess.
§ Mr. MAXTONCan the right hon. Gentleman tell us why the first item of business must be taken before the Christmas Recess? He says that we have come to a part of the Session when business is blocked, The Session is only three weeks old, and this is, I think, the third time we have been asked to suspend the Eleven o'Clock Rule. What is the congestion of business?
The PRIME. MINISTERWe do not wish to enter into the Committee stage of the Bill, but we want the way to be clear for business regarding the Bill as soon as the House resumes, and we must have the Money Resolution now. I understand that there was practically no discussion on Committee stage, and we assumed that, to all intents and purposes, it would be non-contentious on the Report stage. It helps to keep business steadily moving along.
§
Motion made, and Question put,
That the Proceedings in Committee on Unemployment [Money] be exempted, at this day's Sitting, from the provisions of the Standing Order (Sittings of the House)."—[The Prime Minister.]
