HC Deb 04 December 1933 vol 283 cc1296-7
40. Mr. D. GRENFELL

asked the Secretary for Mines what steps he is taking to obtain reports on the results of the use of timber and steel, respectively, on the number of accidents from falls in or near the working faces, in view of the apprehension felt on this subject by workmen?

Dr. BURGIN

I have been asked to reply. The subject has been dealt with in great detail in the published annual reports of His Majesty's Divisional Inspectors of Mines and of the Chief In- spector during the last few years. In addition, extensive inquiries have been, and are being, made by the Safety in Mines Research Board, who have published a number of papers on the results obtain ed.

Mr. GRENFELL

Will the hon. Gentleman say, in view of the inquiries now being carried forward, when he expects to receive a final reply?

Dr. BURGIN

I could not say without reference to my hon. Friend the Secretary for Mines. For the moment I think the preference appears to be in favour of steel. I will let the hon. Member know as soon as possible.

Mr. GRENFELL

Will the hon. Gentleman convey to the Minister the apprehensions of many people working at the coal face, and of Members of this House, on this question?
