HC Deb 27 April 1933 vol 277 c241
4. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Labour whether the Government have any proposals in hand to enable local authorities to start schemes for the relief of unemployment?

Sir H. BETTERTON

For reasons which have been stated to the House on several occasions, the Government do not intend to return to the policy of State-assisted public works for the relief of unemployment. My right hon. Friend the Minister of Health is, however, prepared to consider sympathetically applications for sanctions to loans for public works of a remunerative or useful character.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Is that the only contribution that the Government are making towards employment?

Sir H. BETTERTON

The hon. Member has raised this point very frequently in Debate, and it has already been answered.
