HC Deb 27 April 1933 vol 277 c240
2. Mr. McENTEE

asked the Minister of Labour the number of unemployed in the shipbuilding industry at the last available date, and comparable figures for the years 1932 and 1929?

Sir H. BETTERTON

The number of insured persons in the shipbuilding and ship-repairing classification recorded as unemployed in Great Britain was 103,095 at 20th March, 1933, 107,823 at 21st March, 1932, and 47,698 at 25th March, 1929.

Mr. McENTEE

In view of the very large increase, is the Minister taking any steps to assist the unemployed men in the shipbuilding industry?

Sir H. BETTERTON

We are taking every step in our power to assist them.

Mr. CHARLES WILLIAMS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that employment is always better after four years of pure Tory Government?
