HC Deb 04 April 1933 vol 276 cc1559-60
14. Mr. DAGGAR

asked the Secretary for Mines the average weekly wage paid in the mining industry in South Wales for each year from 1920 to 1932, inclusive?

Mr. BROWN

As the reply involves a number of figures, I will, with the hon. Member's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the reply:

The average weekly cash earnings of all workers employed in the coal mining industry in South Wales and Monmouthshire during the years 1920 to 1932, excluding periods affected by disputes, were as follows:

£ s. d.
1920 (excluding October to December) 4 18 1
1921 (excluding April to June) 3 8 2
1922 2 8 9
1923 2 12 3
1924 2 13 7
1925 2 13 6
1926 (excluding May to December) 2 17 9
1927 2 7 7
1928 2 8 5
1929 2 9 7
1930 (excluding November, 1930, to January, 1931) 2 7 3
1931 2 4 4
1932 2 3 5

The figures for 1927 to 1932 relate to the years ended January, 1928, to 1933, respectively, except those for 1930 which relate to the nine months ended October, 1930. The disputes in 1920 and 1930 lasted about three weeks in each case, but as quarterly returns only are available, the whole of the quarters affected have been excluded.
