HC Deb 25 October 1932 vol 269 cc817-8
54. Mr. HAMMERSLEY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will undertake not to make further payment on account of our debt to the United States until the House is afforded an opportunity of discussing the altered situation arising from Germany's inability to pay reparations?

57. Mr. MANDER

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the present position with regard to the payment of the American Debt?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am not at present in a position to make any statement in regard to this matter.

Mr. HAMMERSLEY

May the House have an assurance that we shall not depart from the policy of the Balfour Note without this House having some opportunity to express an opinion?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I have no doubt there will be an opportunity for discussion when the proper time comes if application is made through the usual channels.

Mr. MANDER

In view of the fact that no provision was made in the Budget for this payment, will my right hon. Friend give an undertaking that no payment will be made without the prior consent of this House?

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Will the right hon. Gentleman make a statement that our word will not be broken?
