HC Deb 28 November 1932 vol 272 cc467-8
28. Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

asked the First Commissioner of Works if he will consider the installation of indicators in the public galleries of the Chamber so that visitors unable to see may know who are taking part in the Debates?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

I feel that the installation suggested is not such as would commend itself to hon. Members generally, on grounds both of detrimental appearance and noise.

Lieut.-Colonel MOORE

Does the right hon. Gentleman not think that this would be an admirable way of allowing the general public who frequent the galleries to become acquainted with their Members?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

Quite frankly, I do not.

Miss HORSBRUGH

Are there not other places where an indicator is more required, such as the room now occupied by the lady Members?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I have received a round robin from all the lady Members but one asking for an indicator in their room. I would point out that the cost is £100, but I will see what I can do next year.

Miss HORSBRUGH

Would it not be possible to remove an indicator from another room where it is not so much required?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I am going into the matter.
