HC Deb 24 November 1932 vol 272 cc229-30
34. Mr. LEONARD

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether his attention has been called to the petition relating to the treatment and suppression of the Ukrainian co-operative societies by the Polish authorities which has recently been submitted to the League of Nations by the Ukrainian co-operative movement; and what action His Majesty's Government intend to take in this matter?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

I have seen a statement to the effect that such a petition has been presented to the Council of the League of Nations, who will no doubt deal with it in accordance with the customary procedure.

Mr. LEONARD

Is the hon. Member aware that a considerable body of opinion in this country is watching this attack on the co-operative principle and expects His Majesty's Government's representative to protect the rights of minority people?

Mr. EDEN

It is not a question of His Majesty's Government's representative. Presumably, the matter will come before the Council in the usual way and then the Council may, if it wishes, refer it to a committee of three.
