HC Deb 15 November 1932 vol 270 c919
10. Captain FULLER

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether in view of the likelihood of a rise in the wholesale price of certain commodities in the near future, he will consider the desirability of appointing a thorough inquiry into all costs and profits of retailing, in order to ensure the protection of the consumer?

Dr. BURGIN

An investigation of so comprehensive a character would be a long and difficult undertaking. In my opinion such inquiries can most usefully be made in relation to particular trades as and when occasion arises. I would remind my hon. and gallant Friend that the Food Council has investigated bread, meat, milk and tea prices in recent years.
