HC Deb 10 November 1932 vol 270 cc504-5
66. Mr. DENMAN

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will set up a Departmental Committee to examine gift-coupon trading and to report what legislation, if any, is required on that matter?

Dr. BURGIN

In the Government's view, this question could be more appropriately examined by a Select Committee of this House rather than by a Departmental Committee. If agreement to refer this question to a Select Committee can be reached by hon. Members interested, the Government would be ready to move for the appointment of such a committee during next Session.

Major COLFOX

Why should the Government interfere with this perfectly legitimate trading and prevent people doing what they like in these matters?

Mr. MABANE

Is it not a fact that this gift-coupon trading prevents retail prices falling?
