HC Deb 31 May 1932 vol 266 c977
50. Mr. VYVYAN ADAMS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he has any information to give as to when a statement may be expected from the Import Duties Advisory Committee recommending an upward revision of duties, in particular in the textile industry?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Major Elliot)

I have no information as to whether, or when, any recommendations of the kind my hon. Friend has in mind are likely to be made, and in any event it would obviously be undesirable for me to give information on the subject. I have no doubt that the committee will give the most expeditious consideration possible to any representations by interests concerned.

Mr. ADAMS

Is my right hon. and gallant Friend aware of the serious displacement of labour that has occurred in the West Riding and elsewhere as a result of the sudden and unpredictable drop in the duties by 30 points?

Major ELLIOT

I do not think that exactly arises out of the question.
