HC Deb 30 May 1932 vol 266 c837
70. Mr. REMER

asked the Minister of Transport if he will take steps to ensure that the Traffic Commissioners, before giving decisions as to road licences, shall take the opinion of the local authorities as to the requirements of the districts, particularly in rural areas, for facilities for omnibus traffic?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Mr. Pybus)

The Traffic Commissioners, when deciding whether to grant or refuse a road service licence, are expressly required under Section 72 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930, to take into consideration any representations which may be made to them by any local authority concerned.

Mr. REMER

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there is great dissatisfaction among local authorities because the traffic commissioners disregard the wishes of local authorities?

Mr. PYBUS

I hardly think that is so. All local authorities are supplied with free copies of the commissioners' notices and proceedings which set out the applications which are before the commissioners and the public sittings at which they will be heard.

Mr. REMER

Will the hon. Gentleman communicate with the traffic commissioners and ask them to give more consideration to the wishes of local authorities than they have done in the past?

Mr. PYBUS

No, Sir. There is no need to do so.
