HC Deb 30 May 1932 vol 266 cc821-2
31. Captain CAZALET

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has received any communication from the German Government in regard to the Gleich International Circus having been refused admission into this country; and if he will state the nature of any such communication?

Mr. EDEN

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. The German Government have protested against the withdrawal of permission for the Gleich Circus to come to this country on the ground that this is contrary to the provisions of the Treaty of Commerce between the United Kingdom and Germany, and they reserve the right of the owners of the circus to put forward a claim for damages.

Captain CAZALET

May I ask the Under-Secretary whether, owing to the misunderstandings in this case, he will use his good offices with the German Government so that they will not carry out reprisals against English artists who may desire to go to Germany?
