HC Deb 12 May 1932 vol 265 cc2054-5
9. Mr. LUNN

asked the Minister of Labour if he will consider what action can be taken to restrain employers who, for purposes of propaganda, persuade their workers to state on their cards that they are unemployed as a result of the withdrawal of the Abnormal Importations Act; and what action is being taken by Employment Exchange officials with regard to payment of benefit in such cases?

Sir H. BETTERTON

I am not aware of any such cases and shall be glad if the hon. Member would give me particulars. Defacement of an unemployment book renders the persons responsible for it liable to prosecution. The right to unemployment benefit would not be affected.

Mr. LUNN

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that at least one Tory employer, and a Tory Member of this House, has given that instruction to his workmen?

Sir H. BETTERTON

No, Sir, I am not aware of that, and, as I have told the hon. Gentleman, I shall be glad if he will give me particulars.
