HC Deb 10 May 1932 vol 265 c1711
27. Captain P. MACDONALD

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the increasing use of the word "British" in the titles of companies and firms which have substantial foreign interests; and whether he will deal with this matter at an early date in any new Companies Bill which may be contemplated?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I am not aware that there has been any appreciable increase in the number of companies registered with the word "British" in their title. As regards firms registered under the Registration of Business Names Act, 1916, I would point out that Section 14 (1) of that Act already provides that the Registrar shall refuse to register a business name containing the word "British" if in the opinion of the Registrar the name on that account is misleading and the Registrar is satisfied that the business is controlled by persons of foreign nationality.
