HC Deb 10 May 1932 vol 265 cc1717-8
56. Captain DOWER

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what is the cost to the Exchequer to date of the department and officials engaged in the registering of transfers on the sale of land, granting of leases, and transfer and sale of leases as required under Section 28 of the Finance Act, 1931 (Land Value Tax)?

Major ELLIOT

The approximate cost of the Inland Revenue staff engaged on this work is £3,400 to date.

Captain DOWER

In view of the very grave need for economy in national expenditure, can the right hon. Gentleman say whether or not the Government intend to go on with these Land Tax proposals, and, if not, will they put an end to this wasteful and extravagant expenditure?

Major ELLIOT

This matter has been debated more than once on the Floor of the House, and we propose to deal with it in the appropriate part of the Finance Bill when it is reached.
