HC Deb 05 May 1932 vol 265 c1271
35. Captain PETER MACDONALD

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury what steps are being taken to prevent any increase of smuggling, in view of the number of articles which have recently been added to the dutiable list?

Major ELLIOT

The possibility to which my hon. and gallant Friend refers is receiving close attention, but it would not be in the public interest to give particulars of steps taken to prevent smuggling.

Sir PERCY HARRIS

Is this one of the few industries which has prospered since the Import Duties Act was put into force?

Vice-Admiral TAYLOR

Is there sufficient personnel in the coast watching service to enable the coast to be patrolled as it used to be by the old coastal service?

Major ELLIOT

I am unable to answer that question without notice.
