HC Deb 27 June 1932 vol 267 cc1465-6
41. Mr. YOUNG

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the difficulty experienced by British traders in obtaining remittances from Uruguay owing to the action of the Government of Uruguay; and whether he contemplates taking any and what steps to deal with the matter?

Mr. COLVILLE

Yes, Sir; His Majesty's Minister at Montevideo is in close touch with the situation, and has taken definite action in certain cases.

Mr. YOUNG

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the French Government have obtained preferential treatment for French traders over British traders? What steps does he propose to take to put British traders on an equitable basis?

Mr. COLVILLE

Where any case of discrimination in any country has been observed, His Majesty's Government have not hesitated to make representations. If the hon. Gentleman has any specific facts to lay before me, I shall be glad to have them.

Mr. YOUNG

We have information from the representative of the British Chambers of Commerce on the spot, who has sent us all the necessary documents as proof. May I have the pleasure of handing them over to the hon. Gentleman?

Mr. COLVILLE

I shall be glad to have any information. I have indicated that our Minister in that country has already taken action.
