HC Deb 27 June 1932 vol 267 cc1461-2
23. Sir A. KNOX

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the rapid change of conditions in the Far East, he will arrange that the head of the Far Eastern Department at the Foreign Office shall be an official who has had recent experience gained in service in China?

Sir J. SIMON

I do not consider that any advantage would be gained by adopting my hon. and gallant Friend's suggestion. Two members of the Far Eastern Department of the Foreign Office have had wide experience of conditions in China.

Sir A. KNOX

Would it not be to the advantage of the Foreign Office if this officer were sent to China for six months in order to get in touch with British opinion there?

Sir J. SIMON

I pay all proper respect to the hon. Gentleman's view, but I am sure that he will accept the fact that all our arrangements are made with the single desire to get the most efficient help from all members of the public service.
