§ 3. Mr. MANDERasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the total emoluments, including salaries and allowances, in gold marks of the Secretary-General of the League of Nations, the Director-General of the International Labour Office, and the British Ambassadors at Paris and Washington?
§ Mr. EDENWith my hon. Friend's permission, I will, since the answer is a long one and involves a table of figures, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.
§ The figures are as follow:
Gold Francs. | Gold Marks.
Secretary-General. Salary | 100,880 | = | 81,700 |
Frais de représentation | 63,050 | = | 51,000 |
Director-General, International Labour Office.
Salary | 90,000 | = | 72,900 |
Frais de représentation | 30,000 | = | 24,300 |
£ Sterling. | Gold Marks | ||
His Majesty's Ambassador at Paris. Salary | 2,250 | = | 34,900 |
Frais de representation | 12,200 | = | 189,100 |
Exchange adjustment | 2,320 | = | 36,000 |
His Majesty's Ambassador at Washington.
Salary | 2,250 | = | 34,900 |
Frais de représentation | 13,250 | = | 205,500 |
Exchange adjustment | 2,490 | = | 38,600 |
§ The exchange adjustment, as was explained in reply to a question by my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Gainsborough (Captain Crookshank) on 15th February, is made in gold countries so as to secure, in respect of rather more than half the emoluments, the same sum in terms of local currency as was previously received. The amount payable to His Majesty's Ambassadors, as frais de représentation, depends upon the requirements of the individual posts. These are not comparable with those of the Secretary-General of the League of Nations and the Director-General of the International Labour Office, since His Majesty's Representatives in these two capitals occupy large official residences and have to maintain suitable establishments for the entertainment which their position requires of them. It may be well to add, that the salaries of His Majesty's Ambassadors are subject to Income Tax and Surtax, while those of the Secretary-General of the League of Nations and the Director-General of the International Labour Office are not.
