HC Deb 22 June 1932 vol 267 c1096
38. Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he has any progress to report in sanctioning further schemes for land drainage?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I have nothing to add to the information I gave in my reply to a question by the hon. Member on 14th June.

Mr. WILLIAMS

In those areas which have recently suffered from flooding, will he use his influence with the catchment area board responsible for the drainage to take in hand the necessary work?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I am sure that the catchment board is alive to the necessity of doing everything in its power to deal with this problem.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that on 25th October last year he himself discouraged them from doing this work?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I thought it necessary at that time to discourage unnecessary expenditure owing to the financial position.
