HC Deb 16 June 1932 vol 267 c528
41. Mr. MANDER

asked the Prime Minister if he will take steps to ensure that building societies shall reduce the rate of interest payable on loan stock, with a view to reducing the cost of acquiring housing accommodation and increasing activity in the building industry?

Mr. BALDWIN

No, Sir. The matter is not one in which Government action could be justified.

Mr. MANDER

Does not the right hon. Gentleman think that an expression of opinion from him would probably be quite sufficient to do all that is required?

Mr. BALDWIN

If my opinion would be so valuable, I must, of course, exercise some reserve in giving it.
