HC Deb 15 June 1932 vol 267 cc394-5
37. Mr. ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

asked the Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department if he is aware that a Russian order for bricks, amounting in value to £200,000, could be placed in Scotland at the present time were not the recent credits for the sale to Russia of goods manufactured in this country up to a total of £1,600,000 exhausted; and whether the Government will consider, in the interests of providing employment in Scotland, the increase of these credits?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the BOARD of TRADE (Mr. Hore-Belisha)

No recent application for facilities in respect of the export of bricks to Russia has been received by the Export Credits Guarantee Department. As regards the second part of the question, I am unable to make any further statement at present, but the question is under constant review.

Mr. SMITHERS

Is it not a fact that the Russian Government have a very large favourable trade balance in this country, and can pay cash if they only will?

Mr. HORE-BELISHA

That question does not arise out of the question on the Paper.

Mr. SMITHERS

It does.
