HC Deb 13 June 1932 vol 267 cc3-4
4. Mr. DAVID GRENFELL

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he is in a position to make any further statement in regard to the situation in the provinces in Burma affected by the recent rebellion and in regard to the general political situation?

Sir S. HOARE

There has been no development or incident of importance during the week.

5. Captain FULLER

asked the Secretary of State for India if he is aware that in the new cantonment of Mingaladon, Burma, where there are over 1,000 European personnel and families, there is no place suitable for public worship; and if he will press the Government of India to proceed with the erection of the church which they have promised for the last four years?

Sir S. HOARE

I have been in communication with the Government of India on the subject; they have placed the project first on the list of pending ecclesiastical major works, but up to August last had not been able to provide the necessary funds.

Captain FULLER

Is my right hon. Friend not aware that this project has been first on the list of major works for the past four years, and while there is no lack of the hope of glory for British troops in India, will he impress on the Government of India the necessity for providing the means of grace as well?

Sir S. HOARE

I am afraid that the delayed action is entirely due to want of funds.
