§ 53. Miss HORSBRUGHasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether, in those advertisements appearing in the Scottish Press encouraging the public to convert War Loan stock, he will consider including among the extracts from Press comments some from Scottish newspapers, and not confining them, as at present, to notices from 12 London newspapers?
§ Major ELLIOTMy hon. Friend will see that her suggestion has already been put into force in the Press advertisements appearing to-day.
§ 56. Mr. DENVILLEasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if he can state the amount of 5 per cent. War Loan owned and converted by the joint stock banks of the country; whether the banks acted for themselves in the conversion; and do they draw 5s. per cent. brokerage in addition to the £1 bonus?
§ Major ELLIOTMy right hon. Friend is glad to say that the response made by the joint stock banks of this country to the Government's offer has been highly gratifying; and the great majority have already indicated their intention to convert the whole of their holdings of the loan. He cannot, however, undertake to publish information respecting the amount of any individual holding. The answer to the last two parts of the question is in the affirmative.
§ Sir W. DAVISONCan the right hon. Gentleman say whether, in the case of individuals making application themselves, the Bank of England still charge a commission of 5 per cent. against the revenue?
§ Mr. DENVILLECould the banks not show a little of the patriotism that the country is showing at this time?
§ Sir W. DAVISONMay we be told whether the Bank of England charges 5 per cent. against a private application which is filled in, and sent direct to the Bank of England?
§ Major ELLIOTI understand that, in the case of an application sent direct, 1112 the charge is not made, but I desire to have any of these technical questions put on the Paper.
