asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the value of the separated, sweetened, condensed milk imported during the financial year ended 31st March, 1931, and the amount of duty paid thereon; and whether the ad valorem incidence of the duty was greater or less than 10 per cent.?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The quantity of separated, sweetened, condensed milk imported during the year ended 31st March, 1931, was 1,992,234 cwts., of a value of £2,779,195. The actual quantity on which duty was paid was slightly less, namely, 1,991,555 cwts., and the duty paid amounted to £531,085, The ad valorem incidence of the duty on these quantities would exceed 10 per cent.
