HC Deb 15 February 1932 vol 261 cc1274-5
51. Sir W. DAVISON

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether, as the result of the inquiries made by his predecessor, he can now say whether it will be possible to provide a room in the immediate vicinity of Palace Yard where chauffeurs waiting for Members can obtain shelter and smoke instead of being compelled as at present to remain often for long periods in Palace Yard?

The FIRST COMMISSIONER of WORKS (Mr. Ormsby-Gore)

The inquiry promised by my predecessor has been made, but I regret to say that it has not been found possible to find any accommodation which could be devoted to the purpose suggested by my hon. Friend.

Sir W. DAVISON

Is my right hon. Friend aware that one of the difficulties arose over the question of calling the chauffeurs when required, and is he aware that the chauffeurs are prepared to organise a call boy service to summon them from any room in the near vicinity of Palace Yard?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

My difficulty is that there is a far greater demand for accommodation in and about this House than the supply will meet. Every room is more than fully occupied, and, unless we turn Ministers or Members out of certain rooms, I see no possibility of finding any room for this purpose.

Mr. McGOVERN

Is it not for the private individuals concerned to provide accommodation, and not this House?

Mr. REMER

Is it not the case that a hut was provided for cab drivers, and could not one be provided for chauffeurs?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

A considerable proportion of Palace Yard is now occupied by offices for workmen engaged on the repair of the dangerous stonework of the House, and I do not think the erection of a further hut in Palace Yard is practicable, at any rate for the present.
