HC Deb 15 February 1932 vol 261 cc1266-7
28. Captain CROOKSHANK

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if his attention has been called to the financial situation of members of His Majesty's Diplomatic and Consular Services in countries which are still on the Gold Standard, in view of the fall in the value of their pay and allowances; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to assist them, during the present crisis?

Sir J. SIMON

This matter has been the subject of careful consideration. While, as a measure of national economy, the larger salaries and allowances for representation have been reduced in these Services generally, adjustments have had to be made in the Gold Standard countries. The general effect of these is to secure, in respect of rather more than one-half the emoluments payable to officers of these Services, the same sum in terms of local currency as they were receiving previously.
