HC Deb 15 February 1932 vol 261 c1267
52. Sir WILFRED SUGDEN

asked the Attorney - General the professional qualifications of the two official arbitrators appointed under the Acquisition of Land (Assessment of Compensation) Act, 1919; and what was the amount of salary, including fees and emoluments, but excluding expenses, received by them during the years 1929–30 and 1930–31

The SOLICITOR-GENERAL (Sir Boyd Merriman)

Both of the official arbitrators are Fellows of the Chartered Surveyors' Institution, and one of them is a past president of that body. They are each in receipt of an inclusive salary of £2,500 a year, which was the total amount received by them, respectively, from all sources for the years mentioned.

Sir W. SUGDEN

In view of the discrepancy in the responsibilities falling an these officers and county court judges will my hon. and learned Friend consider the advisability of paying county court judges, with their greater responsibilities, more in proportion to such responsibilities than is paid to these two gentlemen?

The SOLICITOR-GENERAL

The remuneration of county court judges is not a matter for the Law Officers.

Mr. W. ALLEN

Is it not a fact that the fees received in respect of the awards of the official arbitrators more than cover their salaries?

The SOLICITOR-GENERAL

I must have notice of that question.
