HC Deb 10 February 1932 vol 261 cc853-4
71. Brigadier-General NATION

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether, in view of the improvement in Empire trading that is likely to occur as a result of the concessions made to the Dominions in the new tariff Regulations, he will include the question of overseas land settlement in the agenda for the Ottawa Conference?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for DOMINION AFFAIRS (Mr. Malcolm MacDonald)

My right hon. Friend concurs with the hon. and gallant Member in hoping that the results of the tariff policy recently announced and of the Economic Conference at Ottawa may be such as to create the economic conditions in which migration from this country to the oversea parts of the Empire can again take place; and I can assure him that the question of oversea settlement, as an element in economic co-operation within the Empire, will not be lost sight of by the representatives of the United Kingdom at the Conference.

Mr. MAXTON

Will the question of the privation that is presently being suffered by migrants from this country in Australia and Canada also be on the agenda?

Mr. MacDONALD

That is obviously one of the many considerations which must be taken into account.
