HC Deb 09 February 1932 vol 261 c639
21. Sir WILLIAM WAYLAND

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been directed to the new butter duties imposed by the German Government under the latest German tariff decree; and what steps does he propose to take to counteract their effect on home and Empire producers?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, the trade with Germany in butter of United Kingdom origin is too small to be separately distinguished in the United Kingdom Trade Returns. The question of the effect on Dominion producers is one for the consideration of His Majesty's Governments in the Dominions in the first instance.

Viscountess ASTOR

Would it not be a help if a campaign were started to eat more butter, and drink less beer?
