HC Deb 09 February 1932 vol 261 c660
59. Mr. ANSTRUTHER-GRAY

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the reasons why the percentage of ex-service men employed at the Admiralty was only 32.89 on 1st October last as compared with a percentage of 60.26 ex-service men employed at the Air Ministry on that date; and whether he will consider the desirability of increasing the percentage of ex-service men employed in these Departments?

Major ELLIOT

A large proportion of the present Admiralty staff rendered war service to their Department in a civilian capacity since it was not in the national interest that they should be released for combatant service. It follows that the percentage of ex-service men is much smaller than in the Air Ministry which has to a greater extent been recruited under post-war conditions. I am not aware of any grounds for suggesting that special action is necessary in the case of either of the Departments mentioned.
