HC Deb 04 February 1932 vol 261 cc233-4
19. Mr. RHYS DAVIES

asked the Home Secretary whether the Government have now considered the report of the Select Committee on. Shop Assistants; and what action they propose to take?

Sir H. SAMUEL

The main proposals contained in this report are of a far-reaching and controversial character, and legislation would be necessary to give effect to them. I am afraid that no action can be taken at present.

Mr. DAVIES

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that he gave almost exactly the same reply before Christmas? When will it be possible to get a decision from the Government on this report?

Sir H. SAMUEL

I am grateful to the hon. Member for his tribute to my consistency. I am afraid that the circumstances are not propitious for this legislation this Session.

Viscountess ASTOR

Was not it because this was a controversial question that the Labour Government appointed a Royal Commission? Cannot the right hon. Gentleman now have courage-enough to deal with it?
