HC Deb 19 December 1932 vol 273 cc729-30
23. Sir GIFFORD FOX

asked the Postmaster-General what is the present remaining stock of pedestal telephones; by what extent this has been reduced during the past three months as a result of the intensive advertising campaign; and whether he will now consider the desirability of fitting all new installations

Marquess of HARTINGTON

Could not my right hon. and gallant Friend see his way to answer my Question, which is a request for two figures?

Following is the answer:

with the new pattern telephone as a standard fitting and without any additional charge?

Sir K. WOOD

The number of pedestal telephones belonging to the Post Office is about 1,750,000, including 300,000 in store. Within the past three months the number has been reduced by about 50,000, mainly due to scrapping. I regret that I should not be justified in view of the extra charge for depreciation which would be involved and which would have to be made good by telephone subscribers, in adopting the proposal contained in the last part of my hon. Friend's question.
