HC Deb 19 December 1932 vol 273 c733
33. Mr. THORNE

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of persons who are exempted from the Unemployment Insurance Acts by reason of their employment with local authorities and other undertakings and are in receipt of wages or salary of less than £250 per annum?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. R. S. Hudson)

About 530,000 persons in the permanent employment of railway companies, local authorities and certain other classes of undertakings are excepted from unemployment insurance under the provisions of paragraph (d) of the First Schedule to the Unemployment Insurance Act, 1920. The majority are probably in receipt of wages or salary of less than £250 per annum but there are no statistics on this point.

Mr. THORNE

Does that figure include employés working for the Government?

Mr. HUDSON

No, Sir. The question spoke of "employment with local authorities and other undertakings," and I did not assume the hon. Member meant Government employés.
