HC Deb 19 December 1932 vol 273 c747
52. Mr. ATTLEE

asked the Home Secretary how many Metropolitan police constables during the last 12 months have been warned that unless they show more zeal they will not be granted increments of pay after 17 or 22 years' service?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I would refer the hon. Member to the answer given to the hon. Member for Walthamstow West (Mr. McEntee) on the 1st instant. Of the 174 notices there mentioned, 171 related to additional increments granted after 17 or 22 years' service.

Mr. ATTLEE

Can the right hon. Gentleman give a definition of zeal? Does zeal mean the apprehending of persons and taking them to the police court?
