HC Deb 19 December 1932 vol 273 c747
50. Mr. LUNN

asked the Home Secretary whether any testimonials of character are required from persons enrolling in the Special Constabulary in London?

Sir J. GILMOUR

Yes, Sir. Every applicant for enrolment in the Metropolitan Special Constabulary Reserve has to submit a letter of recommendation either from a householder or from a serving special constable. The appointment must also be recommended by the officer in charge of the police station and the Divisional Commandant of the Special Constabulary, and must be approved at headquarters.

Mr. LUNN

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that one of these men has been released on bail from the Central Criminal Court and is still acting as a special constable?

Sir J. GILMOUR

If the hon. Gentleman has any information of that kind, I shall be glad to receive it.

51. Mr. LUNN

asked the Home Secretary the weekly cost of the special constables in London?

Sir J. GILMOUR

The weekly cost of the Metropolitan Special Constabulary Reserve is between £350 and £360.
