HC Deb 01 December 1932 vol 272 c976
39. Brigadier-General MAKINS

asked the Minister of Health what progress has been made with regard to smoke abatement in the London area and throughout the country during the past 12 months?

Sir H. YOUNG

Considerable progress has been made though much still remains to be done. Eight additional local authorities have made by-laws relating to the emission of black smoke, making a total of 161 authorities in all, including the London County Council. A good deal of useful work has been done by regional committees and many local authorities up and down the country are keeping a closer watch on smoke nuisances.

Sir PERCY HARRIS

Is this morning an example of the success attained by these authorities?

Sir H. YOUNG

No, Sir; that is an instance where much remains to be done.
