HC Deb 28 April 1932 vol 265 cc574-5
63. Mr. POTTER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will ascertain and state the reasons why the League of Nations arranges that the terms of the Hungarian League of Nations loan shall be honoured, but does not take similar steps in respect of the Greek 7 per cent. refugee loan for the supervision of which the League of Nations was responsible?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for FOREIGN AFFAIRS (Mr. Eden)

As explained in the recent report of the Financial Committee of the League, the decision of the Hungarian Government, when compelled to suspend the transfer of the greater part of Hungary's foreign obligations, to maintain in the first place the service of the League of Nations Loan of 1924, was taken by the Hungarian Government itself without consultation with the League of Nations or its Financial Committee. As regards the Greek 7 per cent. Refugee Loan of 1924, I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for West Birkenhead (Lieut.-Colonel J. Sandeman Allen) on Monday last.

Sir A. M. SAMUEL

Will my hon. Friend convey to the League of Nations that it has a moral responsibility here?

Mr. EDEN

If my hon. Friend will read the answer he will discover that.
