HC Deb 25 April 1932 vol 265 cc14-5
75. Sir WILLIAM DAVISON

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether any, and, if so, which, Departments of State have a smaller personnel at the present time than in 1913; whether there has been any reduction in expenditure in any Government Departments within the period mentioned; and, if so, in which?

The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Major Elliot)

As the answer to this question is rather long and contains a number of figures in tabular form, I propose, with my hon. Friend's permission, to circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

Departments showed an actual diminution of net expenditure

Department. Net Expenditure.
1913. 1930.
£ £
Privy Council Office 9,592 8,201
Civil Service Commission 25,730 22,766
County Court Department 3,729
Law Charges and Courts of Law, Scotland. 65,678 50,211
Register House, Edinburgh 527
Ordnance Survey 198,125 135,506

The figures of net expenditure have been adjusted in order to make the comparison as accurate as possible.

There has been a growth in population of over 7 per cent. and in cost of living of over 60 per cent. between the years in question.
