HC Deb 21 April 1932 vol 264 c1614
5. Major-General SIR ALFRED KNOX

asked the Minister of Tabour, if he has now decided whether a percentage of the vacancies in the Slough training school can be reserved for youths born in the locality?

Mr. HUDSON

My right hon. Friend has given careful consideration to this suggestion, but regrets it cannot be adopted in view of the object for which these centres are designed.

Sir A. KNOX

Does my hon. Friend realise that, when this training centre was established, unemployment was very small in Slough, but that since then unemployment has gone up, and there are over 2,000 people unemployed; and is it not hard lines for local young men to see people brought in from South Wales, trained at Government expense, and then pinching their jobs later on?

Mr. HUDSON

On the other hand, unemployment in the areas from which the young men are drawn has gone up much more.

Sir A. KNOX

Why should Slough suffer because of that?

Mr. HUDSON

I cannot admit that Slough does suffer.
