HC Deb 13 April 1932 vol 264 c819
47. Sir REGINALD BLAKER

asked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been called to the increasing number of cases of housebreaking, shopbreaking and burglary which have taken place during recent months within the county of Middlesex; and what action, if any, he proposes to take in the matter?

Mr. STANLEY

The attention of the Commissioner of Police is actively directed to this increase, which is not confined to Middlesex, and all practicable measures are being taken to combat it.

Sir R. BLAKER

Is the hon. Member aware of the grave concern that is felt in portions of Middlesex by reason of the closing of certain police stations? Have any representations been made unsuccessfully to the right hon. Gentleman?

Mr. STANLEY

The hon. Member has a question on that point on the Order Paper to-morrow, to which I have no doubt my right hon. Friend will reply.

Mr. BUCHANAN

Have the Home Office considered whether this alleged increase of crime has any connection with unemployment benefit and the means of dealing with the unemployed, and will his Department make inquiry?
