HC Deb 28 September 1931 vol 257 c13
67. Mr. STRAUSS

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if he can give the total percentage of income to be paid in direct and indirect taxation by taxpayers whose earned income is £50, £100, £150, £200, £500, £1,000, £2,000, £5,000 £10,000, £20,000, and £50,000 under the proposals of the Budget now before Parliament, on the basis of the tables on pages 94 and 95 of the Colwyn Corn-mission's Report, but ignoring provision for Death Duties?

Captain EUAN WALLACE (Lord of the Treasury)

The income and Sur-tax payable on the incomes in question are shown in Command Paper 3954 issued last Friday. The amount of indirect taxation borne by individuals depends very largely on their different personal tastes and the Colwyn Committee were careful to state that their estimates had no official authority. In view of the great labour involved in bringing these tables up to date and the hypothetical character of the results, my right hon. Friend does not feel justified in having their preparation undertaken.
