HC Deb 28 September 1931 vol 257 cc13-4
11. Mr. DAY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the control of the Customs in China still remains in the possession of the Canton Government; and can he give particulars?

Captain EDEN

The hon. Member is misinformed. The control of the Customs in China was never in the possession of the Canton authorities. As explained in a reply to my right hon. Friend the Member for West Woolwich (Sir K. Wood) on the 15th June last, the Customs revenue collected at all ports in the two provinces of Kwangsi and Kwangtung is now handed over to the Canton authorities, subject to the deductions set out in that reply.

Mr. DAY

Have not the Canton authorities any authority over the collection of these Customs duties?

Captain EDEN

I have told the hon. Member that they are receiving the Customs revenue from these two Provinces, but not from the whole of China.
